RiverType began as a protocol and CLI for translating classical Chinese sources into verifiable, editable editions. It is now also a local-first reader: the place where the finished book, its provenance and its honest gaps are finally shown together.

Provenance / 溯源
The book should be able
to say where it came from.
Metadata alone is not provenance. RiverType reads source editions, protocol versions, model and prompt records, human edits, and the boundaries the makers chose to keep visible. If a record is missing, the reader says so.

Classical reading,
not a generic feed.
Vertical or horizontal. Rice paper, plain paper, night or jade. Typography that respects long-form Chinese text, with a local search and annotation layer that stays out of the way.
Made for the long line.
Classical texts are not blog posts. RiverType supports vertical writing, four themes, four typefaces, adjustable line spacing, letter spacing, paragraph spacing and page width. It remembers where you were, without turning reading into a dashboard.

Open the reader
and bring a book.
No account, no library card. The reader accepts the formats RiverType already produces, plus ordinary EPUB. Everything is parsed and stored in your browser.
A book with its record
A small zip with book.json, Markdown chapters and optional provenance. The reader keeps both.
The working directory
A book.yaml plus manuscript/chapters. Scan provenance is surfaced only when the package actually contains it.
Studio layouts
Pages become chapters. Missing assets and media remain visible placeholders; no fabricated QR or fake links.

The reader shows its work.
The production line stays in the terminal: scan, transcribe, verify, collate, assemble and build. RiverType does not replace that with a chat box. The reader consumes the result and keeps the source trail visible.
